The Green-winged Pytilia is a small, colorful finch found across much of sub-Saharan Africa, including Zambia. Males are especially striking, with bright red underparts, a red face, and olive-green wings, while females are more subdued in color but equally elegant. Preferring open woodland, savanna, and scrub habitats, these birds are often seen in pairs or small groups feeding on grass seeds and other small plant materials.
Despite their vivid plumage, Green-winged Pytilias can be surprisingly difficult to spot, as they spend much of their time quietly foraging on the ground or moving discreetly through vegetation.
